After many rumors about the name and the looks of the its new compact hatchback, Alfa Romeo has finally revealed the Giulietta model. While some of you may have known this future car as the Milano, it seems that arguments with the workers in the Italian city have forced Alfa Romeo to adopt an older naming tradition, and use feminine names.

As such, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta is born, and can we say, it is one very attractive “lady”, as you can see in the first official photos attached to the article. The new model, which is based on Fiat’s C-Evo platform, which also generated the Fiat Bravo and Lancia Delta, will duke it out in the fierce segment of the compact hatchbacks.

But in terms of design, it’s safe to say Alfa is close to winning already, borrowing styling cues from the very popular 8C Competizione supercar and MiTo city model. LED technology has been used on the headlamps and taillights, giving the new model an interesting appearance. While it may seem like a pure Italian coupe, the Giulietta will only be manufactured as a five-door model, with the handles for the rear ones being hidden in the fake pillar.

In terms of engines, the Giulietta will have some interesting options, all turbocharged, as a 1.4-liter Multiair petrol one will be offered in two power options, 120 and 170 HP, while a 1.6 and 2.0-liter JTDM diesel units will be offering 105 and 170 HP. Hot hatch fans should also expect a special Quadrifoglio Verde (four-leaf clover)-badged model (think previous GTA editions), which use a 1.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit which generates 235 HP. All engines will comply with Euro 5 emissions regulations, and have standard the Start&Stop feature.

Overall, the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta, which is set to appear next year, will certainly attract many hatchback customers. Are you impressed by it? Leave a comment with your view on the new Italian model.

Silver has been charted as the most popular car color in the world according to a color popularity report, sustained by DuPont which charted the most demanded car colors around the world and for specific regions like North America or Europe.

The end results for the whole word, as you can see above, sees Silver dominate with 25%, followed by Black, 23% and White with 16 %. In North America however, things are a bit different, and White takes the top spot, accounting for 17.8% of cars, while Black (17%) and Silver (16.7%) follow. In Europe, things get a bit darker, as Black accounts for 27 percent, followed by Silver (19.9) and White, with 10.2 %.

Overall, this report is quite interesting. While my own car is white, I’d say that black would be my favorite choice. In the end though, it depends on what car you’re buying. What do you think? What’s your favorite car color?

Bugatti is one of the most prestigious carmakers in the world, enjoying a fantastic history filled with bold models, which continue even today, with the Veyron hypercar and the possible upcoming Galibier model. That is why vintage cars made by the company fetch for such high amounts of money.

But the love of Bugatti collectors from around the world will seriously be tested, as auction house Bonhams has announced that it will selling a Bugatti Brescia Type 13. That’s all fine and dandy, but the odd part is the fact that the car has spent 73 years on the bottom of a lake in Switzerland.

How it got there is even more interesting, as it belonged to a young Italian architect, Marco Schmuklerski, from Nancy, France, on April 11, 1925. He then took it to Switzerland, but decided not to pay the taxes at the customs office, and relied on the speed of the car to escape. But seeing as how the customs officers were still searching for his car, and that Swiss law allowed for the cars involved in crimes to be destroyed, he decided to hide his car. A perfectly simple plan, but he decided that the best hiding place, as you might have guessed, would be in a lake. He wrapped the Bugatti in chains and dunked it in the lake, but due to the weight of the car, the chains snapped, and the car was stuck in the thick mud on the bottom of the lake.

And the car remained stuck there until the summer of this year, attracting many tourists. The mud also helped preserve some of the original paint, and even the air in the tires. Of course it isn’t in the best shapes, as you can see in the pics, but I’m sure many people will bid for such a model. Be warned that the starting price is €500,000, but the money will all go to a children’s charity in Italy.

Just as Hyundai was becoming more and more popular in the USA, thanks to its models’ great economy, a new stain might trouble the South Korean carmaker. A 77-year-old woman from Iowa has taken a local Hyundai dealership to court allegedly because a saleswoman forced her to buy a new car, while she was waiting to get an oil change for her 2006 model.

Audrey McKnight, the elderly woman, revealed that even though she protested and said that she didn’t have any money for a new car, the sales representative pressured her for a few hours in the dealership, and eventually gave up and signed a contract.

The owner of the dealership, Max Holmes, reveals that the elderly woman’s claim is unfounded and that the lawyers will duke it out in court.

Frankly, I’m a bit surprised by this whole deal, and if it turns out to be true, the saleswoman really took her job too seriously. But then again, maybe she saw the potential for a Genesis Coupe in the old lady.

During the press conference it held after the launch of the brand new A8 model, Audi boss Rupert Stadler, has also tackled the fate of the A2, and how it will interact with the upcoming A1 city car model and the bigger A3 hatchback.

While playing a bit with the press, he revealed that: “As we gave the A1 that nomenclature there's clearly room for another product and another concept between the A3,” but refrained from commenting any further.

While he may suggest that the A2 might become niche model which will only cater to an even more specific segment of the compact car market, other rumors believe that it will be used for a possible electric model, which will appear further down the road.

Stadler also took the chance to deny any rumors that his own brand is preparing a variant of the upcoming Volkswagen Up! city car, which was speculated to be badged as an A0.

In what is the most shocking turn of events coming from GM after revealing that it will keep Opel, at the monthly meeting of the board of directors, the CEO, chairman and acting president of the company, Fritz Henderson, has stepped down from his position.

He offered no statements, and his place is now being taken by the chairman of the board, Ed Whitacre, the man appearing in the 60 Day Money Back guarantee ads. He will only act as an interim solution while a new CEO will be found.

“Fritz has done a remarkable job in leading the company through an unprecedented period of challenge and change,” revealed Whitacre. “While momentum has been building over the past several months, all involved agree that changes needed to be made. [...] In closing, I want to once again thank Fritz Henderson for his years of leadership and service to General Motors; we’re grateful for his many contributions. I look forward to working with the entire GM team as we now begin the next chapter of this great company.”

This is the second CEO that GM has lost this year, after Rick Wagoner was “advised” by the Obama Auto Taskforce to resign. Henderson then took control during one of the darkest moments in the history of the company with average results, although many pin the death of Saturn and the turmoil through which Opel has gone, and the one Saab is currently experiencing.

After seeing multiple sets of leaked photos of its US-spec Fiesta model, Ford finally decided to make it official and detail the new model which will be available next year in the USA, after achieving record sales in Europe and Asia.

Available in two bodystyles, the classic hatchback, which retains most of the looks of its European cousin, but also a sedan, which was revealed for the Chinese market earlier this year, the Fiesta hasn’t seen many obvious changes, except for the fog lights, which are replaced by a strip of LED lights, encased in an aluminum-finished space.

But the most important thing is the engine of the new US Fiesta, which is a 1.6-liter DOHC I-4 unit, which delivers 119 HP with 109 lb-ft of torque. What’s most impressive about the unit is that it averages a highway economy figure of 40 mpg, besting many of its compact hatchback rivals. This is largely due to the new PowerShift six-speed automatic transmission, which promises the fuel efficiency of a manual, but also the convenience of a normal automatic.

New rumors indicate that Audi’s entry in the coupe-styled sedan market, the A7 model, will finally be presented as a production-ready model in August, 2010, at the Moscow Motor Show.

These rumors indicate that, contrary to speculations, the A7 won’t really have a higher price than the A6 sedan, on which it is based. The new A7 is set to cost around €2,500 more, meaning that the base model might have a price tag of €32,000 ($48,000).

Last but not least, it seems that the Ingolstadt manufacturer is still undecided on whether the future A7 will have a four or five-seat configuration, as customers might use the model for a variety of purposes.

Tata boss Ratan Tata has once again confirmed that a hybrid version of its low cost Nano model will arrive in the future. He hasn’t revealed what type of system his company will employ, but it’s safe to say that it won’t blow anyone away, or be expensive, as that will contradict the purpose of the Nano.

Either way, the small Indian car is still doing great, and with fuel economy figures around 50 mpg, due to its small engine and weight, it will definitely attract many people in the markets that it will soon appear, like Europe or North America.

This is something all of you pick-up truck fans have certainly been waiting for: the new Volkswagen Amarok model. Developed in Germany and produced at the Volkswagen Pacheco plant in Buenos Aires, Argentina, this new mid-size pick-up boasts some impressive qualities.

Powered by a choice of two TDI engines, the first, available at its release in South America, is a 2.0-liter unit, developing 163 HP with 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque which will let the Amarok haul around 1000 kg (2,300 pounds) and tow around (5300 pounds), and the second, which will be made available next year, when it will appear in other markets, will develop 122 HP with 350 Nm.

Both engines will be paired with a six-speed manual transmission which makes them highly efficient, with the first engine averaging 7.8 liters/100 km, and the second one doing 7.6. The new Amarok will be available, as a standard, as a rear-wheel drive pick-up, but switchable all-wheel drive and permanent all-wheel drive will also be available for customers.

Overall, the new VW Amarok looks pretty good and might put the German carmaker on the map in terms of pick-up trucks. What do you think? The new vehicle, as we reported, will prove itself during the Dakar Rally, starting early next year, as it is the official car of the competition.

I’m sure most Audi fans have eagerly awaited yesterday when the Ingolstadt manufacturer has finally revealed the next generation of its flagship sedan, the A8. The presentation, held at the famous Miami Design district, was spearheaded by actress Lucy Liu, and revealed a very interesting new model.

First off, the design continues the lines set forth by its smaller brothers, the A6 and A4, with the already well-established front grille, but brings a note of dynamics, with the “broken” LED line across the headlamps, which can be ordered in a full LED system, replacing the old bulbs. While some of you may be inclined to say that it just looks like an overgrown A4, Audi insists that the coupe-inspired design works is tailored to the preferences of today’s market, and showcases the Audi Space Frame technology.

But one of the most important aspects is the engine lineup of the new model, which will first be launched in Europe with a choice of two V8 units, a 4.2-liter FSI petrol one, developing 372 HP with 445 Nm of torque, and a consumption of 9.5 liters/100 km, and another 4.2-liter unit, this time a TDI one, which develops 350 HP with 800 Nm, consuming just 7.6 liters/100 km. During the summer of 2010, Audi will also launch two 3.0-liter V6 TDI units, one outputting 204 and the other 250 HP. Expect a high performance W12 unit to follow, as well as a turbocharged V10 for the S8 edition, and, much later in its lifecycle, a hybrid drivetrain. North Americans will only get the 4.2 FSI engine sadly.

On the inside of the car, potential customers will find a revamped MMI operating system with a much more user-friendly interface, as well as a pedestrian detection night vision system and an upgraded, high end audio system. A new eight-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox will also be fitted to the car, which will offer plenty of luxuries as options.

We’ve been seeing multiple and interesting police cars lately, from Abu Dhabi’s Nissan GT-R to the US Dodge Challenger R/T, but they still can’t take on Italy’s Lamborghini Gallardo taskforce, which was constituted by two models donated by the supercarmaker to the Italian police force.

But sadly “was” is the correct tense, as one of the beautiful supercars has been involved in a big crash, near Cremona, due to a reckless driver of a Seat Ibiza which pulled out from a gas station and didn’t make sure he could do so.

According to the report, he clipped the police Gallardo which was returning from a convention on safe driving, which lost control and crashed into a row of parked vehicles, with one car managing to get on the roof of the Italians supercar.

Luckily, the two police officers received only minor injuries, but will have a lot of explaining to do and overtime to finish in order to justify the cost of repairing (if that can even be done) of supercar which costs around $200,000. Thanks for the tip, Gideon!

The Los Angeles Auto Show is quickly approaching its debut, and with it Ford fans are eagerly awaiting news of the US-spec version of the Fiesta model which will finally appear in the country after achieving impressive sales all over the world.

After a first set of pictures, leaked by Ford Canada, which didn’t reveal a very pretty model, a new set of pictures, with both the hatchback and the sedan versions, has appeared, and much to the relief of many Ford fans, they show an overall design line close to the European model.

The biggest change, when compared to the hatchback present in the old continent, is that the fog light have been replaced with aluminum-like air vents, a move which might not go down well with many fans. As far as the sedan goes, I guess it’s OK, but the Fiesta was meant to be a hatch, not an overgrown model that resemble a shrunken Mondeo.

Plenty of motorsport competitions feature a fierce race for the ultimate prize, but in many disciplines, one pilot has achieved excellence, winning a big number of awards. While in Formula 1 we can talk about Michael Schumacher and in MotoGP about Valentino Rossi, when it comes to rally racing, Sebastien Loeb quickly comes to mind.

After earning his sixth world championship title in the WRC, the French driver didn’t start his vacation right away, and decided to enter in the famous Rallye du Var, held in his native country. But for the entirety of the rally, Loeb decided to change things up a bit, and left his usual copilot, Daniel Elena, drive another car, while he used his own wife, Severine, as a copilot.

Needless to say, and further proof of Loeb’s talent, he won the race, at which other famous drivers, besides his copilot, participated, like Robert Kubica, from Renault’s Formula 1 team, which came in at number 29.

In recent years one new option has been demanded by new car buyers: the navigation system. But sadly the steep price has deterred many from opting to install one in their new cars, and instead sticking to asking for directions of buying maps.

But Nissan plans to change all of this, and announced that its most popular 2010 models will have a navigation system option costing just $400, much lower than the average price of such systems, which is around $1,000 and can go even higher.

Don’t go thinking that this will be a spartan system either, as it has been developed with Bosch, and besides giving directions, indicating the fastest or most economical routes, will also have USB and Aux inputs, and even Bluetooth connectivity for your phone. Last but not least, a backup camera in the rear is also included in the package, options which on many cars costs $1,000 alone.

The only downside though is that the LCD screen measures only five inches, rendering some text a bit hard to rear. But according to the team at Detroit News, which tested the system on the 2010 Nissan Sentra, it is reliable and for $400, a bargain.

Hopefully this trend started by Nissan will pick up and more automakers will lower their prices on navigation systems.

Saab’s odyssey is still far from coming to an end, as GM has confirmed that it is in talks with parties interested in acquiring the Swedish brand after the deal with Koenigsegg hasn’t reached a conclusion.

“We can confirm that we have heard from different investors,” a GM spokesman revealed. “We have a close dialogue and close contact with several who have expressed interest in buying Saab Automobile. It is not so surprising, given that there were 27 parties who were interested [when Saab was first up for sale] and 10 who came and looked the company over in April and May.”

We reported last week that two potential entities interested in buying the struggling Saab from GM, Beijing Motors (BAIC) and Wyomind-based Mercbanco Bank are once again interested in the carmaker. Nothing is for certain though, and while BAIC didn’t reveal anything, the CEO of Merbanco, Chris Johnston revealed that if his company will buy the Scandinavian brand, he wants the deal to take place in as little time as possible, avoiding any tough negotiations over intellectual rights or other problems.

Overall, while Saab might be balancing on a high wire act, it seems that the safety net is in place. We will let you know on how the situation develops soon.

While most car fans consider the very existence of the Tata Nano as being an attack against the car industry as we know it, it seems that Carnation Auto, based in New Delphi, has teamed up with Dilip Chhabria’s DC Design to offer aftermarket tuning options for the Nano.

That’s right, let that idea sink in for a bit. We’ll not only be invaded, at least according to Tata, by Nano models, but some of them will also receive tuning to stand out from the pack, and judging from the prototype model pictured above, it’s not going to be pretty.

I’m sure the Essen Motor Show had plenty of interesting tuning projects on display, but this Mercedes-Benz Gullwing takes the cake in my mind. Now all you Merc fans shouldn’t get angry, as the guy who build it, Swiss drag racer Stefan Winter, didn’t sacrifice a classic Gullwing model, as he recreated the body in fiberglass and placed it on top of a tubular frame, which housed a small block Chevrolet engine.

The unit in question has been expanded to 422 cubic inches (around 6.9-liters), and saw new pistons, crankshaft, cylinder heads added, in order to achieve a massive power rating of 1,050 HP, which propels this drag rocket on the quarter mile strip in just 8.1 seconds, crossing the finish line at 166 mph (267 km/h).

I’m sure many of you won’t approve of such a thing, but it is quite impressive. A sacrilege, but still impressive.

Once again the boys were back yesterday evening on BBC and the show was host to some very heated debates from caravaning to what brand made the best cars and what model can make the Stig spin out twice on the test track.

For the play by play review of the Top Gear’s Season 14 Episode 3 review, including the insignificant feat of Jesus’ Second Coming, hit the jump and be amazed at what innovations can the boys cook up.

The first part of the show was dedicated to a new way of caravaning which should prevent the dreadful things on the from appearing on the UK roads ever again. Instead of hoisting the caravan to a diesel sedan and going on the road, James May believed that it was for the best to hoist the caravan in the air, by sticking it to a giant hot air balloon.

Meanwhile, on the ground, Richard Hammond was driving a stunning Lamborghini Gallardo Balboni in order to complete the caravaning experience and meet up with May on his preferred camping resort. Needless to say, and in case you read about the mishap involving May, his airship and a few trees, things didn’t go so well, including a meet up with the Air Police, as the Top Gear presenter violated the Norfolk airport’s air space. Let’s just say, airship caravaning won’t become popular anytime soon.

Next up was the news segment, which besides talking about the whole baby Kia story and telling any upcoming father to lease a Lamborghini and name his kid after that, saw a very special guest star, in the form of none other than Jesus Christ. Of course such a thing was impossible, but Jeremy was quick to deem one of the spectators as Jesus and said that the British transit authority was making late everywhere he went due to road work.

In case you followed last week’s episode, the presenters asked viewers to send in their opinion about the car brand which made the most beautiful cars in the world. While the viewers placed Ford at the top of the list, both Jeremy and Richard had a different opinion, the right one, at least according to just nine more viewers. According to them, Lancia made the best and most beautiful cars in the world.

What followed was every Lancia fan’s dream, with iconic models such as the MonteCarlo, Stratos or Delta Integrale being shown. Even though some of us might consider another carmaker as making the greatest cars ever, you must admit that Lancia still deserves some merits.

But because Lancia isn’t present in the UK, Jeremy decided to showcase a kit car based on the rally Stratos, which can be made by your own two hands, or can pay someone else to do. The result isn’t what you might expect, as the car broke down twice, once with Jeremy behind the wheel and the second time with the Stig, but it looked stunning either way and, when it did decide to cooperate, generated a thrilling lap in heavy rain that forced the Stig to spin out twice, and got on the board with the worst time ever.

The Star in a reasonably priced car was none other than Chris Evans, which is a huge Ferrari fan, fact highlighted by his impressive collection of models from the Italian carmaker
